Help She Can't Swim - Oxford, Wheatsheaf - 09.06.05
Gigs
Over the past few years Oxford's independent label, Vacuous Pop, have released some great music: The Edmund Fitzgerald/YMSS, randomNumber, Cat On Form, Detwiije and Help She Can't Swim's first release, 'Suck Our Band' which features my favourite song by the band, 'My Favourite Lay'. So with this, and my ever-increasing appearances in Oxford, I've learnt that not only do Vacuous Pop release great music, they put on gigs with bands that make great music! My ears have been blessed with the sounds of Part Chimp, Magik Markers, Lapsus Lingue, to name a few and it saddens me that soon Vacuous Pop won't be doing many more gigs as they were something for me to look up to...

The Hungry I - Birthday
Singles
Hey, it's like Apollo 13 meets hip-hop whilst orbitting around The Beta Band with Radiohead on your car-radio. Actually, I'm not sure if that'd make much of a sound, let alone the complex beauty that is The Hungry I's music.

¡Forward, Russia! - Liverpool, Academy 1 - 21.05.06
Gigs
Next-big-thing, The Long Blondes have not had it easy, but after this opening slot, it’s hard to work out why the Sheffield based band are not already held close to the Indie nation’s heart. Consisting of two couples and a front woman who could easily contest to be the most charismatic woman in England, the Long Blondes themselves have suggested their struggle can be attributed to their sexuality. Certainly, singer Kate Jackson plays on this throughout the set, strutting around her limited space and stamping her feet to the beat, she purrs the lyrics to songs 'Lust in the Movies' and 'A Knife For The Girls' into the microphone. Although the girlish shrieking backing vocals are unbearably harsh on some of the songs, particularly last single 'Separated By Motorways', The Long Blondes make for an impressive opening slot, and warm the crowd up well for the acts to follow.

Muse - London, The Hospital - 12.05.06
Gigs
Triple suns burn in the dazzling purple sky above an infinite, wasted, post-apocalyptic desert. In the distance we see a man running as fast as he possibly can: in his hand is a shiny, silver button and round his neck a buzzing electric halo: broadcasting his current position to any enemy drone that may be in the area. He has left the one girl who could have saved him behind - sacrificing his memories of her in order that billons of others may live. But this time is the last time - this time he is going to do whatever it takes to win her back.

The Cooper Temple Clause - Bristol, Bierkeller - 24.05.06
Gigs
Going with a friend who, on the very same night, admitted she rarely turned up for the support band because they were usually “not worth my time” undoubtedly did not help me form an optimistic opinion of the first support band, The Race. Accurately described as “a bad Editors cover band”, they failed to draw my attention or the kind of eager atmosphere the good support bands will summon. Although the music was not unlistenable, their songs were at best album fillers; this kind of band you can imagine some mainstream, dominant label signing in an attempt to cash-in on a certain scene. With a little more time and devotion, creativity and experience could make the band into a sonic bomb, but if they continue as they are, they’ll soon find themselves at the bottom of every local band bill.

Every Time I Die - London, Mean Fiddler - 19.05.06
Gigs
“AHH!” that’s all that could be heard when a girl in the queue found out Gerard Way isn’t going to be singing with Every Time I Die tonight, and thus her night was ruined. For everyone else though, there was a real sense of anticipation about the return of Every Time I Die (minus My Chemical Romance) in support of their lukewarm responded album ‘Gutter Phenomenon’. The anticipation, by the way, was split between a massive desire to see what a lot of people consider one of their favourite bands and that they are just as good as they hoped.

Good Shoes - Oxford, Zodiac - 21.05.06
Gigs
November, originally due on second, got the party started for Good Shoes. I was quite impressed: they reminded me a bit of We Are Scientists' earlier stuff, with some catchy bass and drums grabbing my attention from the start. Saying that, the songs were all fairly similar (and all seemed to be named after girls- I caught 'Annabelle' and 'Sarah' at least), and I found that at times the vocals got a bit whiney for my liking. Generally they were pretty good for support, although I thought they were lacking in anything incredibly special.
