Records like this can't really be ignored that easily, when I first heard Friendly Fires it was through their excellent and (rightfully) much-celebrated single 'Paris'. They were very much riding a tidal wave of hype, yet I've got a feeling that they've somehow missed out on some of the glories that their lesser contemporaries are enjoying. I guess that's the fickle life of the music industry for you... |

For someone who doesn't revel in acoutic, somewhat-folk, emotive music, 2008 has been time to reconsider. Frightened Rabbit were the first to make me question my beliefs with their engaging and genuine, 'The Midnight Organ Fight'. Then came this album, 'Visiter' by The Dodos. |

Foot Village are NOT hippies! I should point this out now - mainly because of the artwork, and mainly because they consist of four-drummers but this isn't drum circle music! |

On its release ‘Visiter’, the Dodos' second release, was met with much critical praise - yet inexplicably failed to make any big dents in the music scene. So it was with some shock when I discovered they were playing at ULU, on this their second UK headline tour and due to the fact their performance at this years V festival attracted about 30 people. I was even more surprised when I heard that the tour support was Euros Childs, former singer of welsh cult favourites Gorky's Zygotic Mynci. It seems however the power of the internet has done the Dodos wonders, with stories of their greatness being passed by word of mouth through internet message boards and the such like as judging by the amount of people present for their set. |

In their short life, Lovvers have managed to almost do a full roundabout in sound. Each of the three 7”s released on Jonson Family Records showed a gradual change in style, with the first self-titled EP of noisy, fuzzed up garage morphing into the slow-pace and sludgy riffs found on the last single 'Laughing Man'. |

I wouldn't consider myself an aficionado of the Melvins. However, I'd say I'm a fan with a reasonable knowledge of their output. They've been making music a while now, and they've covered a fair bit of ground: experimental, electronic, ambient dabblings to straight-up rock of a much more conventional nature. It's not like it's a gradual progression either; the band genre-jump incessantly. Matched with their knack for producing on a steady basis, they command a certain degree of respect from all across the musical spectrum. |

Vivian Girls' self-titled full-length debut is a mysterious little creation. Crassly put, it's sort of shoegaze-punk-jangly-pop. But Vivian girls deserve so much more than PR buzz-word descriptions. They genuinely are pushing quite a unique sound. It's haunting, simple, and quite capturing. However, they're somehow lacking in coverage from the bigger fish. |
