Die! Die! Die! - Bedford, Esquires - 12.04.08
Gigs
There's only so much faith one can have for their hometown when the turnout is as weak as it is tonight for a band that really deserve so much more. But I'll come back to that later, first I have to mention that before I leave my house to come to this gig I get a phone call from the promoter telling me that I just missed out on Die! Die! Die!'s rather unique entrance. This involved smashing their tourbus into a car in the venue's car park, the drummer drunkenly running out of the van to push over a table full of The Fly magazines to the ground and then falling down the stairs to the venue's foyer whilst he apparently looked like he was going to cry and sipped from a bottle of water handed to him by his band mates, raising fears over whether or not the band would even end up performing tonight!

Holy Fuck - Norwich, Arts Centre - 06.04.08
Gigs
It's Sunday the 6th of April in 2000 and 8, and in Norwich, like the rest of the country, it is snowing and it is cold. If there were any more evidence needed that we're all fucked - presumably due to that Global Warming thing I've heard so much about - this day is pretty much it.

Blood Red Shoes - London, King's College - 09.04.08
Gigs
What a relief! British music has undergone a much needed U-Turn in the last couple of years. The days of cigarettes & alcohol flexing lad rock are dwindling by the day and now bands with talent to match 'New Weird America' and the like, are rising through the ranks. King's College is sold out, and raucous chants for Blood Red Shoes abound as they timidly enter stage right.

Why? - Alopecia
Albums
There are those records that you eagerly anticipate, itching for their release, only to have your expectations dashed and your enthusiasm thwarted by formula: a mere marketable sugar-coated product. It could be argued that Anticon have recently suffered from a descent into formula. The drones of Yoni’s cLOUDDEAD roots had become a label foundation, causing an influx of indistinguishable side-projects (much like anything Tim Kinsella seems to write). Regardless they are a label overflowing with originality and depth, but this release is being distributed on none other than Tomlab.

Youthmovies - Good Nature
Albums
With their decision to contract their original band name 'Youthmovie Soundtrack Strategies' to 'Youthmovies' and their album title reduce by a whole TWENTY words... You wouldn't be wrong to expect other aspects of the band to be streamlined.

A Silver Mt. Zion - London, Scala - 07.04.08
Gigs
Hmv.co.uk is both the best and worst thing that has happened to my life. It's great because delivery's free and as a studen i'm entitled to discounts, but on the flip side, I hate it because it can be really flaky on delivery times (something you're not sure if you should really complain too much about seeing as you're getting a pretty good deal for being patient). However, when I recently tried to order Thee Silver Mount's new record '13 Blues for thirteen Moons' recently, I was enticed by the awesome value of the deal. Unfortunately though, hmv tried to claim they didn't have any copies of this brand new album in stock, and thus I didn't get to listen to it in full before this show.

Slow Club - London, Madame Jojo's - 28.03.08
Gigs
House of Brothers are quite the anomaly. Here we have an up-and-coming British, folky acoustic three-piece with resemblances to Arab Strap and Fionn Regan. The stylistic shift in Andrew Johnson’s career as a musician is absurd. The UK’s only real answer to sketchy math-emo arrived in the form of The Murder of Rosa Luxemburg: a brutally discordant and spazzy behemoth of a band that prompted Johnson’s emergence into the heart of cult music. Opening tonight at Madame JoJo’s, House of Brother’s mellow approach is not as attention-grabbing but equally valid. ‘Lose Yourself’ is a standout on their debut EP, they are ones to watch.
