Times New Viking - Rip It Off
Albums
Not once on 'Rip It Off' does a single track come out the red. It's an album that's characterised by being distorted and messy but also by a poppy attitude to songwriting. Generally, it's pretty enjoyable but also a little samey and lacking in songs that really, really appeal.

Earth - The Bees Made Honey in the Lion's Skull
Albums
It almost seems difficult to imagine Earth's significance in a post-ISIS, Pelican and indeed Neurosis world. In the 15 plus years since Earth's first full album "Drone" Metal has gone a long, long way, picking up new intricacies and added depth as it's snowballed into a gloomy cave somewhere. But if it wasn't for Dylan Carson's visionary approach, albeit a rather downbeat vision, none of the aforementioned bands would have found their footing to propell the genre to what it is today.

Gallows - Leeds, Met University - 24.02.08
Gigs
Tonight feels like my summer two years ago. All of the bands featured tonight haven't made a full length release of new material since 2006. Gallows in particular must be feeling the strain - they've more or less been playing these songs since 2005 now - and tonight, this is their major downfall.

Les Savy Fav - Patty Lee
Singles
For me, 'Patty Lee' was a peak of 2007's output that I never appreciated until 2008. Under Pitchfork's advice, I watched the Conan O'Brian performance and was blown away. Candidly addressing the audience, Tim Harrington lunged from stage to floor and, with a bountiful display of t-shirts, in the process charming me. Knees worn out and chest on display, he left the stage in a hurry but I was a convert now and so I watched again.

Diebold - Listen to my Heartbeast
Albums
'Listen to my Heartbeast' is at times slow, sludgey metal and at others fast or jazzy. An underpinning, thorough theme though is that it's majorly lo-fi, repetitive and extremely minimalist in terms of both instruments and musical arrangement.

Glorytellers - Glorytellers
Albums
Glorytellers face a daunting task. In a time where "acoustic" can seemingly instantly convey to some people a band or artist's sound, it's got to be hard to distinguish themselves. Sadly, for Glorytellers, they remain a part of the scenery.

Dillinger Escape Plan - Newcastle, Academy - 13.02.08
Gigs
Dillinger, it would seem, are one of those bands who have been over-achieving their whole career. Releasing two groundbreaking albums, working with personal heroes, and having a revered and infamously explosive live act. Then, in 2007, they suddenly became very human; their string of bad luck continued as they lost their drummer to Coheed and Cambria no less, their second guitarist dropped out, and their bassist sustained an injury preventing them from touring. Until now that is. Worst of all, their third full length 'Ire Works' was received with, undeservedly, lukewarm response. Much like Poison the Well, Dillinger are now one of those bands who had their time as the metal hierarchy darlings, and now have been spectacularly dropped; both bands have gone through a ridiculous amount of change band-member wise too.
