Seemingly regarded as a bit of a throwaway or joke by many, ‘The Friends EP’ came off as far from it for me. Five new tracks sprawl themselves across genres and still come off smelling strongly of Ween. |

The aim of 'Anonymous' alone is enough to make me like it. A little saddened by the poor quality of music (“kind of blues and country type stuff, or too much like 'new age' music”) he found when playing Indian reservations with Hank Williams III, Tomahawk guitarist/bassist, Duane Denison, took it upon himself to discover the true music of North America’s aboriginal people. He said he “figured there must be native music somewhere that was more aggressive, spookier, and more kinetic.” If 'Anonymous' is an accurate representation of what he found, and apparently it is, then he was successful. |

'None Shall Pass' has Aesop Rock once again confidently demonstrating his matured style. Having never been to Barden's Boudoir before (but continually being amazed at the line-ups I saw advertised there) I was quite keen to get to the venue. It was nearly impossible to find - a door, sandwiched in between a couple of (what I remember to be) kebab shops. Still, once inside the secret basement, I was rewarded instantly.

I have seen Sunn O))) once before and, though I had an album, I had never really listened to it, in fact, I didn’t really think it was possible. When I saw them I was a little surprised: I hadn’t expected theatrics. Reflecting, I think I had expected two guys, one with lots of hair and one balding and looking very middle-aged, on a half-heartedly lit stage moving around each other and twisting dials on feedback machines and synthesizers, having abandoned all vestiges of an image beyond maybe an Earth or Boris t-shirt. |
