Bad Brains - Banned In D.C. Bad Brains Greatest Riffs |
I first encountered Bad Brains in the summer of 1990 through my older and much cooler cousin whilst staying on an army base in Germany. From the minute I heard 'Pay To Cum' through a shitty boombox in a park, I knew this was a band I would come to love dearly for a long time.
This compilation pulls together the best parts from all their records including the aforementioned 'Pay To Cum' from their original 7" along with five tracks from 'Rock For Light' which is still one of my favourite albums ever. This band were just so fucking raw and passionate about the hardcore scene but what made them stand out from everybody else was that they were four Rastafarian guys who weren't playing reggae! They shared stages with Minor Threat and Black Flag and took charge of a scene that was dominated by white steakheads while overcoming discrimination fired at them from every direction. Janes Addiction stole a hell of a lot of riffs from them as well!! They make me wanna just dance and sing and pick up my guitar everytime I hear the start of 'Sailin On'.
Okay....I kinda lied about the reggae part. There are a few reggae-style tracks on here and while that type of thing just ain't my bag, they fit into the running really well.
'Sacred Love' remains ones of the sauciest songs to ever grace a punk record and I was happy to see it included on this compilation and every track from 'Rock For Light' and 'Black Dots' deserves to be on here but then again I can honestly say that there is not one dud track on here. If you have never heard Bad Brains then this is an excellent place to start since it can be picked up pretty cheaply. Hear the pioneers of hardcore. Accept no imitations!
