Various - How Soon Is Now? |
The Smiths, in their first incarnation, were one of the greatest bands the
20th century had seen. They combined Morrissey's brilliant, intelligent and
witty lyrics with Johnny Marr's sublime musicianship to produce some of the
greatest indie anthems ever recorded. It's a shame, therefore, that 20 years
on, some of the UK and America's best new bands decide to sabotage every
good memory of the band and transform it into this turgid rubbish.
It's not really the bands' fault. They were doing what they could to pay
tribute to the band, but even the vocal talents of Frank Turner (Million
Dead), Colin Doran (Hundred Reasons), Tim Kashier (Cursive) and the hobbit
out of yourcodenameis:milo cannot match the unique voice of Morrissey. Some decent efforts are made, especially by Hundred Reasons on their cover of 'How Soon Is Now?', available as a downloadable single, but their best work is ritually slaughtered by these bands, My Awesome Compilation in particular with their astoundingly shit 'There Is A Light That Never Goes Out'.
Don't use this as a guide to the bands featured here, some of the bands have produced great works of their own, but this is an experiment that really should not have been carried out. An awful attempt that all but destroys the memory of how fantastic the Smiths were.
