We here at DIRTY ZINE, we not only provide expert opinion on what CDs to hit
or miss, we also like to think we're finding out what it is to be
"alternative". The music is a huge part, obviously, but also the fashions,
attitudes, and other resources of entertainment. This movie is possibly the most
quintessential "alternative" and cult film of the decade so far. Unfortunately, as
our site manager staunchly refuses to add a DVD section, I'm gonna have to do
the soundtrack. Which is fine by me.
Donnie Darko is an intelligent take on the teen movie, a boy chosen to
change the world has to find his place in it first. Set in 1988, it's obvious that
we're gonna climb into a time portal and go 80s. Possibly without the haircuts.
The choicest cuts have been taken from 80s radio for this movie soundtrack. Songs by Manchester's very own Joy Division featuring along Brits Echo and The Bunnymen, with Tears For Fears and INXS representing the Yanks.
Key parts of the movie spring to mind when listening to the soundtrack, like Cherita's "dying swan" routine to 'Show Me', or the end sequence personified by Gary Jules' Tears For Fears cover version, 'Mad World'.
The second disc is the haunting, atmospheric instrumental soundtrack put together by musical genius Michael Andrews. What is even more amazing is when you find out these sounds were all made from insturments available in 1988. Just listen to 'Waltz in the 4th Dimension' or 'Slipping Away' to find out what I mean.
Certainly my favourite film of all time, and if you buy the 2 Disc Directors Cut DVD, it'll be yours too.
