The Beat Poet - Hardest Battles Fought EP |
|
The Beat Poet's demo begins with the melodic, depressive and gloomy sounds of 'Thats Entertainment', a song that goes from calm to mad and falls down the stairs in a fit of rage. The vocals are just amazing, a bit like Maynard James Keenan. The song then transforms quite beautifully out of it's previously slow and dreary paced style into some frantic riffery [complete with gibberish vocals] and finally dying out after spasming on the floor.
The next song, 'Hardest Battles Fought' is a little more up-tempo but the rumbling broodyness that is The Beat Poet's sound is still present. It also displays the tightness they can perform songs and the vocals continue to impress.
'Evil Noize' follows, it's a bit unnecessary really... but sounds pretty crazy, I'd quite like to know how they made it! It just works as a link track and is a bit of a waste of time unless you want to test out your speakers.
Now, you have the fucking brilliant 'Trying To Be Honest' that probably makes Beat Poet fans wet themselves with excitement when they hear the opening few seconds of it. It's bloody good, the tension is kept for ages before finally breaking down into the coolest riff ever, the recording could be a bit better, the guitars and bass sound extremely rough. Still, its glory shines through and yes... great vocals once again. The singer has talent, I really like the lyrics too.
The Beat Poet are something Wigan should be proud of, this is quite easily the best demo I've received by an unsigned band. Which if they get enough of exposure they won't be for long, you must hear these guys.
