Stem - Any Old Iron EP
Oh my, Stem are fucking great. I'm not being stupid here, they really are fucking great! Opener 'Kar Ceys' features weird but instantly catchy lyrics, "flying birds can't live off stealing jump leads". I'm sure he's right, but it's not something I'd use my valuable brain power on thinking about. Still, the music is great and swiftly speeds up 2 minutes in and at this point I was grabbed by the ears and sucked in, this is really impressive stuff. 'Words Rhyme For Reason' is probably my favourite at the moment, the chorus is just amazing, reminding me of something Cave In or Oceansize would write. Mutterings of the NHS means the odd lyric work is still there, it must mean something metaphorically... but I don't care, it's infectious and after a while you have to listen to the band again. Which is good. There's this "under/over" bit just before the chorus which is just magic.

'Ice Cap Zone' is the last track, it features thumbling drums, a great lead guitar delay thing and a great melody played by the rhythm guitar and the vocalist suddenly adopts some sort of accent. Weird lyric highlight of this song: "I'm cutting off your ears... Leave your teethmarks on the window-sill". Really do check them out, these songs will have you hooked. They're available to download off the Stem website which is currently down at the moment.
