Envy - A Dead Sinking Story
I first heard this band live at ATP weekend one of 2004 they were the first band of the festival I saw and from the moment I entered the room I knew it was going to be a fucking ace weekend, anyway as I was saying... I walked in and they were playing one of their post rock parts and I thought to myself this is ok, then out of the blue they just burst into life with an intensely emotional fury, don't let the who emotional thing put you off as I'll tell you now, this band are something else you have to check them out in order to get a full idea of the beauty and emotion that goes into their music.

Once they had finished I thought right "I'm going to find a merch stall." As soon as I found it I saw an Envy CD, it was their latest album 'A Dead Sinking Story'. I looked to the left and saw the 12" LP, paid my money and was well chuffed, only problem was I had to wait a further two and a half days to listen to it.

After listening to it for the first time it didn't leave my record player for about two weeks - I was and am in love with it. The tracks blend perfectly without any odd or out of place transitions, from their Mogwai-esque progressive parts, to their all out emotional outbursts. But what makes this album so perfect is that fact that not only do the vocals wreak of emotion but the music does as well.

They pick the perfect melodies and riffs to fit with the desperate cries of the vocalist and creates the perfect formula for a band trying to express themselves. The fact that they are Japanese and all their lyrics are sung in Japanese does not make any difference, as its hard enough to make out what an English speaking hardcore band are singing as it is!

I'm all for foreign bands singing in their own language. It makes it feel more real and I guess makes the message even stronger. And if you do want to know what he's singing then just look in the booklet provided and it has English translations. In conclusion this is yet another example of Japanese genius, they seem to be able to pull anything off and do it extremely well, their song writing skill are impeccable and they are always moving forward always progressing, finding something new to add to their already new sounds. I love this album and will probably play it to my kids when and if I have any. I hope anyone that reads this and buys the album will feel the same.
