This gig was so 'secret' there was already a queue of about 150 outside when I got there. Luckily I managed to sneak to the front with a friend who had been standing there for quite a while so cheers Beki for that. Brudenells capacity holds about 250, leaving a good few people (over 100 I’d say) left standing outside getting rained on. Fortunately for them while the support acts were on, Franz hopped outside and performed a mini-gig in the car park, which I'm devastated to have missed!
The last support act was pretty good, Paul (Franz) played the drums, and Alex and Nick joined in at the end with bass and guitar. They began their long awaited set at a rather late 10.45pm, Alex introduced the band, "Hello, we're The Black Hands" to the reply of, "Yeah, right" from the rest of the crowd.
Obviously ecstatic from being able to play in front of such a small and shall I say well-behaved crowd, Franz bounded through most of their album. Every single song gained an incredible reaction, in particular 'Matinee' and 'Take me Out'. Just when I though the gig couldn’t get any better, Eleanor from Fiery Furnaces sheepishly took to the stage to do a heart warming rendition of 'Love and Destroy'. By this time I'd had a few drinks and my ability to use my camera had flayed somewhat, I do apologise. By the time the band reached the hectic 'This Fire', Alex and the rest of the band couldn’t stop the huge sweaty grin on their faces, but I think that went for just about everybody there.
With enough noise from the crowd to break the windows, Franz dragged their soggy bodies back on the stage for an encore of ‘Shopping for Blood’ and ‘Darts of pleasure’ This was one of the rarest gigs I’ve ever been too, and I doubt Franz will have much opportunity to perform in such an intimate venue. They accomplished the one thing that they’d always wanted to do; they made the girls dance! And on that note, thank you to Brudenell Social club and Franz Ferdinand, Leeds loves you.
