65daysofstatic - Norwich, Waterfront - 10.10.05
65 Days of Static are possibly one of the most undeservedly hyped bands around right now. Pretentious song titles, epic movements, no vocals, just what do these boys from Sheffield think they are doing? At least, that is what I used to think.

But I'll come back to that. First is the subject of tonight’s support - both local bands but at different ends of the rock music spectrum. Driving Holden play a very ordinary set which in parts sound like Million Dead crossed with Bloc Party. They are a band who shows some potential, but the end result ends up being a muddle of sounds from a band who haven’t quite figured out where they are going with their music. Some songs show a heavy energetic side, but it never amounts to anything and they end up sounding scared of themselves and what they could achieve. Their poppy, lighter songs give some reason to dance, but show nothing particularly special. In the end they just sound emotionless and sometimes generic giving them nothing over their peers.

Independent Thought Alarm, however, make sure they get the crowd’s attention through their 30 minute set which doesn’t actually stop. The progressive local noise band has grown a fair reputation as one of Norwich’s brightest hopes. Sadly though, this was possibly the last ever gig for the Isis meets 65 Days of Static wonders. Regardless, they rip through their set with the same ease and enjoyment as previous gigs, but sometimes get a little too long-winded in building up to something which sometimes is so fast you blink and then you miss it. However in moments where they do get epic and really heart-felt, you feel like flying away. No, this isn’t the best music this genre can create; you only have to listen to the masters such as Isis or Pelican to work that out, but since this was a band who showed so much potential, is really is a sad event for the local music scene as they were one of the few bands doing something different. Godspeed you guys.

Up until this night, I really just didn’t see what the attraction was with 65 Days of Static. Up until now they seemed like a band who were too big for their own shoes and were just 'average'. It is now evident that you really can’t judge this band until you see them live. This was one of the most exhilarating music experiences I have been privileged to be apart of. The energy, the way they create their sounds in less than obvious ways, the sheer fact that when their music is being played, no, performed in front of you, you are helpless to anything but dance or just caught up in the rhythm itself.
