How good is your memory? Do you remember 'I Am a Cloud' from the radio?
Probably not, because when it was kicking round in the early noughties, the
airwaves were awash with drop-d, distortion and Durst. If you had half a
brain and quarter of an ear, you turned off. Boyhitscar? Nu-Metal. Not
interested.
Which would have been very, very unfair. Their self titled record may have
been lost amongst the crimes to culture that were Linkin Park and friends,
but listening now, you can't help but wonder why. Catharsis, urgency, an
enthralling voice and enourmous, memorable tunes, all with the eastern
twinge alluded to by ...Trail of Dead from time to time. Cave-In spring to
mind too, at times. It's a record that really has stood the test of time in
the same way that something like Chocolate Starfish has totally flunked it.
I must admit I actually gave up on this band. Dropped by their label,
nu-metal goes out, no news for years, then, suddenly, a new album. I saw no
press releases, no reviews, no tour dates. In fact, the only reason I knew
of it's existance was when I stumbled upon it on a popular file sharing
program. So, over three months after it's release, I finally get my hands on
it.
Thank god I did. The fact that this record is so, so good merely reinforces
my argument that they were a cut above the rest when they were first drawn
to my attention. After a soothing opening, 'Tonight' hits you between the
eyes. Despite being more restrained than their debut, this record still
knows when to stamp on pedals and shred vocal chords. Eastern rythym duels
with western melody throughout, the quality dropping not a jot. For the
entire record. Without a moments exception.
Picking the highlights of this record seems so unfair to the rest of it, but
I also feel obliged to point listeners in the direction of 'Windswept', a
staggering display of building tension, unusually released in one sudden,
sharp burst, and the astonishing 'You Don't Care', which combined everything
great about this band into five minutes of searing breakdowns and soaring
verses.
Dig this out, along with their self-titled record. You'll be glad you did.
