Buk And Skit Festival - A Field In Reading - 27.06.04
I arrive with mates eager to see some of the best independent artists out at the moment…and what do I see as soon as I walk in? Biffy Clyro just starting their soundcheck! It’s amazing seeing them play in front of about 20-30 people all sitting on the grass! They go through new track “Wave Upon Wave Upon Wave” as well as “Liberate The Illiterate/A Mong Among Mingers” and make me even more expectant of the exciting day ahead. Sylosis are first on, with some complex metal guitar parts and funky effects they could maybe impress, except that’s all they had going for them really, they didn’t even need the two vocalists as they didn’t work well together. Just boring metal, nothing new, nothing exciting. I leave to get a burger, so good I went back later to get another one.

So I had wasted my time with Sylosis, which was annoying because during the burgereating I wandered over to the Punk Stage and The Attika State were playing to apacked out tent. They sounded really decent and I wish I had caught their whole set instead of the last couple of tracks.

Back on the Main Stage though, Dr.Sid had begun their set, I found the guitars a bit“tinny” at times but otherwise I thought they were really impressive, definitely one to look out for the future.

Aconite Thrill were on next and they were outstanding! Bouncing all over the place, you could tell they loved being here, personally I think they should have been put higher up on the bill. Whatever you do, make sure you see this band play live, the energy they produced outside on a cloudy day was immense, so them playing inside to a packed out crowd would be amazing.

It was eventually going to come; the problem was it didn’t seem to stop for ages! The rain had started to hammer down and a lot of people ran to hide under the tents. But I stayed out with many others to watch The Fight strut, jump and spit their stuff in front of a crowd who seemed more than happy to slide about on the soaking grass. The Fights energetic punch in the face was perfect timing as their fast, aggressive punk songs made people start to really enjoy themselves in the rain. (Ed's note - their lead singer is fucking fit as well.)

Cautiously walking onto the stage were Next Nine Years, they really need to be more confident, after every song the guitarist was apologising! There really was no need as I thought their set was filled with quality duel-vocalled hard rocking tracks. Their only problem is that they don’t present themselves very well, but the music is excellent and that’s all that matters.

Winnebago Deal stagger on stage, and don’t stop for their whole half hour set! Not one gap between songs, just half an hour full of hard, gritty old school rock. They were really good at times, but just a bit too one dimensional for my liking.

The crowd was growing now, as were the rain clouds, but no one cared as Jetplane Landing pounced on stage and blew all preceding bands out of the water. Their songs so infectiously catchy you can’t help but raise your fist and join in with the chants. Not just brilliant songs though, Andrew Ferris is truly a terrific frontman, interacting with the crowd in such a friendly manner, wanting to talk to everyone and anyone who would approach him, but what amazed me the most was how guitarist Cahir O'Doherty just wouldn’t stop chucking himself about! An incredible band, things will only get bigger and better for them.

The next band had a lot to live up to…that band was Million Dead. With new guitarist Tom Fowler playing his first gig with the band, they hastily ripped into 'Breaking the Back' which was the perfect song to open their set with. New song 'I Gave My Eyes to Stevie Wonder' is a clearly becoming a fan-favourite and had everyone “stutter-ing”(sorry I couldn’t resist). I’ve seen Million Dead a few times now, and they are an amazing live act, lanky frontman Frank Turner has such an amazing voice, never missing a note. Closing with 'The Rise and Fall' it had Frank collapsing into a heap on the floor and the band leaving the stage in a wail of feedback. Superb.

And now the headliners…any other band would have a lot to live up to, having to follow up blistering sets from Jetplane Landing and Million Dead. But Biffy could have got on stage and farted for an hour the crowd still would have loved it! Opening with the blistering “Bodies in Flight” Biffy has the crowd under their spell right from the start. Three tracks from new album “Infinity Land” were played throughout the set, “Theres No Such Thing As a Jaggy Snake” being the only one the crowd are aware of, “Wave Upon Wave Upon Wave” and the pop-infested “Glitter and Trauma”. If they're just a taster of what the album will sound like, it’s going to be amazing! With all the singles from the last two albums been played, Biffy Close their set with the incredible “Now the Action is on Fire” which is just one of those songs that leave you gagging to hear more. 'Mon the Biffy.

All in all today was a great day for independent music, a great day out to hear loads of new bands and see your favourites! Can’t wait for next year.
