The Crimea - Tragedy Rocks |
In an indie scene oversaturated by unimaginable amounts of gash (Mystery Jets, anyone?), its refreshing to find a band doing something a little different.
The Crimea formed out of the ashes of The Crocketts, and had a single in John Peel's festive 50. Their sound is a unique one, somewhere in between R.E.M, Sixties psychedelica and other hawt new band Guillemots, and their live show, as witnessed by your reviewer, is mad as biscuits but oddly enthralling.
This is a gem of an album. Frontman Davey is a great lyricist ("Takes one black cloud to spoil a bright day, I was the black cloud, she was the bright day"), and the album moves through different moods, each song throwing up something different.
Tracks worth checking out include 'Lottery Winners On Acid', 'White Russian Galaxy', 'Baby Boom' and 'Girl Just Died', but if you're just generally looking for something a bit different and a bit good, this is the album for you.
