The Horrors - Sheena Is A Parasite
The Horrors are a Southend-based, grot-punk collision of guitars and tin drums, content on being exactly what they are - fantastic, yet undiscovered.

At last, a hate song that doesn’t wear thin, doesn’t fall head first into the pavement at 4 in the morning, ruining those converse trainers and getting mud on that polka dot dress. Heavy bass, shrieks of a guitar over the top, drums that don’t appear to touch ground for the majority of the songs. Some bloke screaming about parasites over the top. Those who think The Horrors are horrors will be glad to know the song is only 1 minute 37 seconds long. Those who love this kind of thing should give the band credit; the short songs are the ones that leave you gagging for more, after all.

I’ve been unnecessarily reassured that the band are better live. Unnecessary, because 'Sheena Is A Parasite' was and will always be the kind of single I’d go without food to buy, only to be told by my flatmates or parents to “turn it off, it’s making me paranoid!” I expect if I saw the band live, I’d get so hooked the next time they came anywhere near me I’d sell one of my kidneys to get to them, so really it’s lucky I’ve not seen them live.

OK, I realise some people will clutch their ears as soon as the ludicrously named Faris Badwan opens his mouth, so be warned – this band are clearly influenced by grot punk. Neils Children, remember them? They’re still about, and they frequently play with The Horrors, as do Pink Riot and a few other distinctly Southend bands. Beware fans of the Verve, beware!! Otherwise, give it a go, it’s the kind of thing that makes emo fans realise what they’ve been missing.
