Good Shoes - Oxford, Zodiac - 21.05.06 |
|
November, originally due on second, got the party started for Good Shoes. I was quite impressed: they reminded me a bit of We Are Scientists' earlier stuff, with some catchy bass and drums grabbing my attention from the start. Saying that, the songs were all fairly similar (and all seemed to be named after girls- I caught 'Annabelle' and 'Sarah' at least), and I found that at times the vocals got a bit whiney for my liking. Generally they were pretty good for support, although I thought they were lacking in anything incredibly special.
Next up were Good Shoes. The crowd was small, but the hardcore supporters in the front went from nought to mental in about five seconds. Having seen the band a couple of times before, I knew what to expect. Good Shoes are fun to watch live, partially because you can tell they are absolutely delighted (and somewhat surprised) to be playing to an audience at all, and also because they get everyone bopping up and down - it's unavoidable! Rhys tends to vary his vocals from the recorded versions, swinging the singing/mumbling more towards the singing than the mumbling, and I can't tell if I like that or not, but it works for the crazed dancers at the front, whilst making their set seem more unique.
Listening to the songs, the music sounds very clean and simple, but actually watching them play it's obvious that it's actually not at all - it's just engineered to seem that way. They're definitely an upbeat band, good for a dance, which is sort of strange when you consider that their lyrics can be pretty sombre - covering issues like racism in multicultural areas and drug abuse. I was a happy customer - I'm looking forward to more bopping at Truck!
