Of Montreal - Cambridge, The Soul Tree - 30.05.07
‘Hissing Fauna, Are You The Destroyer?’ the most recent work completed by ‘Of Montreal’ became the weapon of choice for my binge listening in the car on the journey up to the nights show. Through the midst of students and other assorted intellectuals, I spotted a Sufjan Stevens T-Shirt, reminding me that alongside Mr. Stevens, Kevin Barnes is on the unwritten shortlist of the next Brian Wilson (of Beach Boys fame) cliché.

Whether comparisons are the way forward or not, the similarities can only be a good thing, Baroque Pop requires its smarts, its passions and its surf-pop-harmonies! And yes, the night was full of them. The extended set displayed a band full of both potential and significant accomplishment, and yes in places, two bass guitars. They were lovely Rickenbackers, one of the many visual mind benders of the show. The fantastic evening gowns were in constant battle with the actual music over who was the loudest.

I felt privileged to be at this show, it became a blur of florescent colours, sing songs around a non-existent campfire and a scene for lovers. Ill raise my hands and admit I am a lightweight, but never before has one corona melted my sense of self awareness. There was indeed something in the air, Elegant and extravagant, Oh what a night.
