Times New Viking - Rip It Off
Not once on 'Rip It Off' does a single track come out the red. It's an album that's characterised by being distorted and messy but also by a poppy attitude to songwriting. Generally, it's pretty enjoyable but also a little samey and lacking in songs that really, really appeal.

Grittiness is the album's central principle. Endlessly forcing sound waves to distort, Times New Viking certainly stay true to the idea, but, as an idea, it's easily overdone. Really it seems to emphasise whether or not the song is great, for me. Sometimes, for example on '(My Head)' or 'Post Teen Drama', the songwriting and production come together in a really energetic and awesome sounding noise-pop kinda thing, but at other times, when the song's not so hot, it just seems to make it duller.

The album's definitely worth checking out for the moments where everything comes together and shit sounds really great (of which there actually are quite a few). Unfortunately, I found that there was a lot of stuff that could maybe have been cut from 'Rip it Off' just because it wasn't exciting enough. LP length aspirations maybe forced them to keep those tracks on (it only just makes the half hour mark with these 16 selections). An EP would probably have been a more appropriate format.
