Bon Iver - For Emma, Forever ago |
In late 2006 at the end of his old band, DeYarmond Edison, Justin Vernon decided to move to a remote cabin in the woods and lived alone for 3 months occupying himself with physical chores. Whilst out there through the result of isolation and contemplation he started writing and recording music, the result of which can be seen on this album. And thank fuck he did. Ever since this album arrived in my post-box it hasn’t left my CD player.
The album is filled with simple but effective acoustic guitars and beautiful swirling vocals that could conjure up mental images of TV on the Radio if they recorded an acoustic album. Vernon’s voice is one of the stand out things throughout the album, his falsetto vocals overdubbed several times are a perfect coupling with the music.
Standout track ‘Skinny Love’ is a song that you can repeat over and over again and never get tired of whilst falling more and more in love with it at every listen. It almost makes you want to move to a remote cabin in the woods yourself, one of the early contenders for album of the year.
