Slow Club - London, Madame Jojo's - 28.03.08
House of Brothers are quite the anomaly. Here we have an up-and-coming British, folky acoustic three-piece with resemblances to Arab Strap and Fionn Regan. The stylistic shift in Andrew Johnson’s career as a musician is absurd. The UK’s only real answer to sketchy math-emo arrived in the form of The Murder of Rosa Luxemburg: a brutally discordant and spazzy behemoth of a band that prompted Johnson’s emergence into the heart of cult music. Opening tonight at Madame JoJo’s, House of Brother’s mellow approach is not as attention-grabbing but equally valid. ‘Lose Yourself’ is a standout on their debut EP, they are ones to watch.

Jonquil’s rise amongst Oxford’s songwriting academy has been proven. They are the darlings of their hometown and rightfully so. Hootie’s bass replaces Sam Scott’s trumpet admirably; the band’s full sound remains intact. From the vocal march of ‘Lions’ to the existential proverb of ‘Whistle Low’, Jonquil introduce themselves to the London’s slightly younger demographic. A smattering of the band’s fanbase sing along, with ‘Babe, So Why Now No?’ a standout tonight, with the line: ‘and you’ll get the last word/even if it’s random sounds/woah oh-oh’ making a particular impression.

The Soho crowd swarms in part way through Jonquil in time for White Heat’s headliners and Sheffield darlings, Slow Club. The Moshi Moshi endorsed Charles and Becky, attempt to emote gaiety through harmonic coo coo’s and the slap-bang haberdashery of antique chair percussion. The pairing truly have their art honed and indiefected. For the charismatic pairing, all signs point to ‘NOW’. Jonquil are anything but; steeped in scholarly know-how and bludgeoned accordion parps, understated apparel and a quiet albeit sociable demeanour. Both are convincing, a night where music triumphs on the small scale. The greatest scale there is.
