It's Sunday the 6th of April in 2000 and 8, and in Norwich, like the rest of the country, it is snowing and it is cold. If there were any more evidence needed that we're all fucked - presumably due to that Global Warming thing I've heard so much about - this day is pretty much it.
Anyway, I'm bringing this up because everything about the Toronto four-piece (which is more or less a certified given nowadays; gone are the days of improvised sets and revolving band members) smacks of a summer festival set. As the night progressed an increasing number of people found a place to get a bit of a dance on, but the majority can't help but forget that they're in a old, cold church in Norwich, and outside its miserable.
This doesn't take anything away from the performance; they are tight and fun and entertaining and everything else, but it really feels like it deserves to be sitting in the baking sun, with people drunk and under other substances all over the place, and general mood is a very upbeat one.
To be honest, my only real gripe is that this set makes me pine for Battles. I mean, I hate lazy journalistic comparisons as much as the next person but a lot of their stage presence (which apparently their marketing people agree with too, judging by the new video for 'Lovely Allen') reminds me of the New York 4-piece, and of course I'm not comparing their music as they are individual beasts; but there's no denying who the more exciting live act is.
But it is still an entertaining show as they rip through their debut self-titled album from last year although due to its backing track it is more or less just a louder version of that record. At times it does get pretty exciting as the songs get bigger and deeper as more psychedelic sonic explosions happen before the come down, necessary "latest single" performance of 'Lovely Allen'.
But overall it is a fair set for a fair band, let's just hope that Latitude or T in the Park or someone are paying attention and get this band in, quickly!
