Grammatics - D.I.L.E.M.M.A. / Polar Swelling |
"Intelligent pop" seems to be a conquest that's taking more and more people by the heart as 2008 rolls by. With a well-documented (and admittedly interesting, but wholly unconvincing) effort from Oxford rockers Foals invading the pop boundaries with Don Caballero guitar styles, the door is left wide open for a band that wants to bring something new to pop's boundaries.
Enter Grammatics. With a crisp drum intro (jesus, I love that drum sound) and shimmering harmonics, 'D.I.L.E.M.M.A.' wonders on through sweeping cello-led melodies to dramatic twists whilst singer/guitarist Owen Brinley's vocals perhaps bring in perhaps the band's most 'pop' aspect.
Second track on the double-a side single is 'Polar Swelling'. A less drawing track than its precursor but with the same taste for suspenseful moments and sweet melodies.
It's promising stuff from Grammatics who have the craft and - perhaps most importantly - the authenticity to conquer Britain's flaccid indie pop scene with a new vision.
