Health - Disco
To the uninitiated, Health are an amazing noise band from Los Angeles. Perhaps best described by myself in past reviews as "sounding like a bunch of superheroes, with tribal beats blasted at them whilst they scream and chant with genderless chants". Their debut album last year left many astounded, their live shows impressed even more and now they are rightfully "hot stuff".

But, you see, whilst this was happening, Canadian duo Crystal Castles (best known for their pretty good electro album, a penchant for thievery, an appearance on Skins -yuck- and having a sexy front lady) had remixed one of their songs, 'Crimewave' and conquered our shores with it as a single. In fairness, it sounded nothing like Health's original, apart from the vocal melody and the ending, but it did show how flexibile Health's brand of music could be interpreted by their electro and disco peers.

Since then, more remixes have appeared and true to form they have not let Health's music down. Most follow suite with their remixes offering completely new vantage points and reworkings of Health's music with the core elements in-tact. For a fan, like me, it's exciting but even for total new-comers to Health's music this album stands up in its own right as a solid disco album.

Yep, to its credit, this isn't some vanity project of a remix album. Moments like the opener, 'Triceratops' remixed by Acid Girls, 'Heaven' remixed by Narctrax, are tasteful enough for Health's original ideas to still be there and creative enough to add something new to the songs. The previously mentioned Crystal Castles remix and the Cfcf remix of 'Triceratops' are down-tempo, sexy and entrancing. Part of me wishes that I didn't know that these were re-workings of Health songs because it works as a pretty obscure album and, due to its collaborative nature, rarely falls short of new ideas.

Saying that, it's farely cohesive despite this. I guess Health chose a bunch of people whose remixes were not too far astray from each others so it would all work together. My main disappointment was the 'Perfect Skin' remix by Curses!. The electronic beats underneath the song are really great, and so is the middle part of the song but if Curses! was a bit more modest on this one then 'Perfect Skin' could have been reworked into the brilliant dance song that at hints at being on the original album.

Whatever's said of this album though, it's a good move by Health to release it now whilst they're (presumably) working on their new album to keep fans of the debut busy. Especially since it was only 26 mins long!
