"This band are no longer mine" was the thought that finally ran through my head at about the 5th bland song I was subjected to in a row - even worse was that it was 'Superconnected' which should have been a band career highlight like it is on record. The songs that preceded it I could kinda let off, they were material from the Kevin Drew and Brendan Canning records oh whom I didn't have a massive opinion of anyway, but when 'Superconnected' came along and completely failed at having any kind of sound dynamics or the dizzying euphoric chorus it deserved, well, I kinda just gave up trying right there. I believe my exact words, out loud, for everyone to hear during this moment of realisation was "man, this is REALLY dull".
I don't have many regrets in my life, but what still annoys me to this day that due to a string of misfortunes - exams, not wanting to risk my then under 18 status, travelling to ridiculous places - is that I never got to see Broken Social Scene in their original form. Everyone used to say how incredible live they were, and I still believe them, because whatever I was looking at on stage now, it was NOT the Broken Social Scene I had fell in love with all those years ago - case in point, they didn't even play 'Cause = Time' to salvage this train wreck of a show.
To be honest, the whole experience was totally confusing and frustrating. Much like Interpol at Ally Pally back in November, the sound was awful, the crowd were annoying and there was absolutely no atmosphere. The 'Pol however I can let off because, they definitely did give it their all and in the end it was just down to a simple bad decision that they played such a terrible venue. BSS it seemed didn't even care, they were so confident in the dull, lifeless music they were performing that it was all the more frustrating. To re-iterate, the Broken Social Scene who made beautifully produced, beautifully written creepy-but-caring indie-folk songs are long dead. All I am looking at now is a pretentious "rock" band whom think they're still doing something relevant but they're really, really not. Of course, more power to them, I appreciate artists get bored of making the same music all the time and want to try out new things, but these things are not what I fell in love with, and the cruel mistress of a relationship appears to be kicking me while I'm down.
As a result, I now no longer trust the brand name called "Broken Social Scene" (because that is all it seems to be now a days). It is a name that apparently can be applied to anything to make suckers like me come, nay, travel to its shows and think that I might be getting something remotely like what I was expecting from a name that used to hold a lot of positive connotations for me. This pretty much means now I will refuse to go and see this band live again (or at least pay for it) unless I have conclusive evidence that they're making exciting music again (or a "Don't Look Back" performance of 'You Forgot it in People').
What's strange as well is that it started brilliantly; opening with 'KC Accidental' and going into '7/4 Shoreline' was an inspired moment of genius, and saw the only real bit of energy the band produced all night. But the whole performance just nose dived after that. The new songs; awful. 'Anthems For A 17 Yr Old Girl'; flat. Gordon Moakes of Bloc Party playing 'Stars and Sons'; pointless. 'It's All Gonna Break'; COMPLETELY OVERBLOWN. Kevin Drew playing 'Lover's Spit' solo; ruined by the idiotic crowd who became more annoying as each song went on due to showing a complete disregard for who it actually was they were seeing.
For fucks sake, even the brilliantly talented Charles Spearin of the fantastic Do Make Say Think got blasted for doing probably the only thing of interest of the evening. It was just a flat, anti-climatic pathetic excuse of a show and I'm amazed I'm the only one who thinks this. So it's time for me to bid farewell to this band called Broken Social Scene, I wish it all the luck in the world with future relationships, but me, I just can't face being hurt all over again.
