Kong - Blood of a Dove/A Hint of Rennit Innit |
Kong might just be the best band in Britain right now. Ferociously powerful, stunningly inventive, and equal doses of scary and humorous. This is their first "official" release of apparently many to come.
The Shellac-inspired opening riff of 'Blood of a Dove' is just so... Well, it's disgusting, it's angry... and it's fucking beautiful. The vocals are scathing and the drumming is pleasingly complex but not overly-deliberated - with more of a jazzy feel to it. The song itself builds and builds before gracefully committing suicide around the 3-and-a-half-minute mark.
'A Hint of Rennit Innit' is more impressive. The vocals are more sparse here but a lot more strange, "When I wear my red shoes my legs go... Stiff!". The music is focused but often strays through a bunch of random discordant scales - like a music teacher scarily displaying virtuosity in a crazed mid-life crisis in front of his students. Rhythms are created, destroyed, rebuilt around the ruins and destroyed once more. It's monstrous but impossible to tire of when you're listening to it.
So there, two songs I find it hard to pick faults with. Kong have managed to succesfully transfer the character of their live shows to wax and it's heart-stoppingly awesome. Pick it up or regret not doing so.
