MP3: Deerhunter - 'Nothing Ever Happened' ('Microcastle', 4AD)

1. What’s the most over-the-top thing anyone’s said about your music?
Well, recently I guess the one that comes to mind was when we toured with Nine Inch Nails and we heard some interesting things there. Some girl came up to us and was like, "you guys sound just like Angels & Airwaves!" I don't know what that is but someone told me that was like an emo metal band? Another person was like, "you guys are like Incubus! You guys are into Incubus, aren't you?" That was funny.

2. Favourite films?
I like several films by this Russian director named [Adrei] Tarkovsky; my favourite of his is The Mirror. I'm really into John Hughes, like, y'know, teen comedies - American teen comedies from the 80's. I'm not into that much 'artsy' stuff. My least favourite film director is probably [Jean-Luc] Godard. I think he's like, the ultimate, art-school hipster. Everytime someone starts talking to me about Godard I just roll my eyes and want to call my Mom on the phone and talk about Steven Spielberg.

3. Top 5 albums?
Okay;
#1. B-52s - S/T
#2. Brian Eno's 'Here Come The Warm Jets'
#3. Stereolab - 'Cobra & Phases Group Play Voltage In The Milky Night'
#4. Storm And Stress - 'Under Thunder And Fluorescent Light'
#5. The Velvet Underground and Nico.

4. Most scary thing to happen at a gig?
Well, there's been a lot of scary things, but, one time I threw a mic and it split a guy's head open and there was a lot of blood... But then, the guy turned out to be okay about it. He was like, high 5-ing me later. It was totally unintentional and I felt really stupid because it wasn't meant like an act of aggression, it was more of a reflex.

Another one was with Atlas Sound and I had a band touring with me and we were in San Fransisco - I don't drink alcohol or do any drugs - but in San Fransisco I kind of fell off the wagon and got really, really wasted. We played this show and I ended up breaking my bass player, Honey's nose with the mic stand. Again, it wasn't intentional - I just tend to play guitar kind of wildly and I'm really awkward and lanky so I hit the mic stand with my guitar and it went [Bradford claps his hands] and it hit her nose and she was pouring blood. She wasn't angry either; y'know, it was a mistake and we were laughing about it.

5. If you weren’t in a band, what would you be doing?
Probably working in a copy shop, making Xerox copies or doing something like that. I like to do organised, repetitive things. Or maybe putting things in boxes.

6. If you had to come up with your own question, what would it be? (This is basically a chance for you to say whatever you want as an answer)?
When will I stop smoking? The answer would be: as soon as I have the will-power. They have a drug in America, I don't know if you have it here but they have this new wonder drug. You take it and it makes you not want to smoke, it's really, really twisted though and also it affects your sex life because apparently they're tied to the same part of the brain. The rush you get from smoking and an orgasm come from the same part of the brain. So it numbs the rush you get from smoking but it apparently removes the ability to... do that other thing.
