MP3: Action Beat - 'Le Chap' ('The Noise Band From Bletchley', Truth Cult)

1. What’s the most over-the-top thing anyone’s said about your band?
I don’t know, maybe that 'we're good'. Ha. Nah, I like it when people say that they didn't like us... To my face. Excellent.

2. Favourite films?
Hmmm.... Well, lots, but the best ones I have seen recently are Persepolis and No Country For Old Men. My favourite has to be Raging Bull, but I'm no film critic!

3. Top 5 albums?
Whoa.... 1. Sonic Youth - ‘Daydream Nation’, 2. Glenn Branca - ‘The Ascension’, 3. Nirvana - ‘Bleach’ (or ‘Nevermind’, or ‘In Utero’ - I can't make up my mind), 4. Fugazi - ‘Repeater’ (though, I'd love to sneak ‘In On The Kill Taker’ in there) & 5. The Ex - ‘Starters Alternators’ (but ‘The Weathermen Shrugged Their Shoulders’ is also amazing... Well, any Ex album is).

4. Most scary thing to happen at a gig?
Holy shit, loads of things. We were in Belfast during the worst rioting in 20 years... But that's probably not the worst.

We were playing in Nottingham with Trencher (shit gig, no money, no one there) and after the show we go to load our equipment out to the cars which are parked down the road... So, we are walking these beast amps (Fender Twins) to the car, and there seems to be a lot of rowdy behaviour going on outside. Cops and shit everywhere, and this club banging the garage out. So, we put the amps down and open the boot, then this car suddenly reverses down the street at 50mph or some shit, there is a sudden smash of glass, which seems to me like the guy went over a bottle. Well, he did... The car grinds to an immediate halt, and this buff motherfucker and 3 goons get out. They run over to this nerdy looking guy and start pushing him and shouting, "Who threw the glass, who threw the glass???" - the guy obviously shits himself, and points at us. These 4 guys then come running over to us and start getting in our face big time. Nottingham is notoriously violent, so I thought we were gonna get into some serious trouble. The guy was pushing me, and looking to smack me, I just pleaded my innocence and looked for cops. Webb wasn't so lucky, cause he got smacked in the face. Though it wasn't too hard and the guy looked like the wrestler Papa sShango!! [Laughs] The girlfriend of one of the guys finally convinced them to leave off, and showed them the bottle they had reversed over. They seriosuly wanted to beat us though at the end, Papa Shango goes to pick up my twin amp and said "look boys, lets take their boxes". [Laughs] Luckily the maggot couldn't lift it!?

5. If you weren’t in a band, what would you be doing?
I have a degree in Politics, so I would probably try and teach that within a college and work my way up to a PHD. I have ideas about a study on punk, but they still have to develop. Webb is a teacher also, Carney would probably travel the world and try teaching abroad. Taylor would do an MA in music, and fuck knows what Burton (the drummer) would do... So, we have to play in the band, because that is the most enjoyable. But, we mostly have an education to 'fall back on'. But i don't want to fall back. Since I've left uni I've basically had no work or money. We have to keep all our time free, because you never know when a show or tour will come up.?

6. If you had to come up with your own question, what would it be? (This is basically a chance for you to say whatever you want as an answer)??
Well, okay. I’ll talk about the album. We went to the studio for 5 days to record and mix. We had 3 songs that were definitely ready to record. Though they weren't actually rehearsed or planned out. We had to make up an album at the studio, and it seems that we've pulled it off (again). There are 12 songs, and it's 42 minutes... Sounds great. It's kinda poppy in places, but ferocious too.... I really like it... I think there are 6 songs which could be 'singles'... though, we're not a band that will do singles...

There is actually a track on the record which I think would be prefect for a bbc wildlife advert [laughs] maybe because its a Sigur Ros-sounding song.... We have all different song lengths too - a few that are under 2 minutes, some average lengths of 3-4 minutes, then some that are 5-7.

Cheers to Don.
