Spotlight: Three One G Records
Spotlight is about repping the diligent people out there working to bring respect to the term web 2.0 and dignity to the phrase "user-based content". Last week we honoured Vim Crony for his contribution to the LA punk scene, this week we're focusing on fellow Californians, San Diego's Three One G Records.

Spaz-rock aficionados Three One G know their niche better than most. A label synonymous with a sound, their hand-picked crop of fine artists each blast out a different kind of noise with some kind of common theme between them. The intense, the slightly frightening, and the brutal all find a place for themselves and their music in Three One G Records, and their YouTube channel lets all those who can't witness it first hand catch up from the comfort of their computer.

A large part of the videos posted is taken up by live footage. Some are just clips, short but worth it, but most of the time they put up entire shows from bands all across their roster (from the legendary Blood Brothers to the relatively unheard of WARSAWWASRAW). There's about four or five Locust shows up (some ultra-recent, some years old), but one in particular really distinguishes itself. There's not much information about the particular concert, but "The Locust (LIVE) PART 3 of 3" is an amazing performance from the masters of frantic screamo. Without wanting to spoil the surprise too much, it's advised that you sit through the 4 minutes of drone, not for the 45 seconds of insane clattering immediately after, but for the brilliant surprise of an ending.

Most of Three One G's YouTube output shares a common thread: not particularly well shot footage, but excellent subjects. For example, the Fast Forward gig they've got up. There's footage of different shows by the same band (doing pretty much an identical show) elsewhere on YouTube, captured much better than this one, but Three One G's clip shows the best performance I've seen. Again, it's best to let the video do the talking without giving too much away. Confusing, mysterious, and violent; it says a lot about Three One G and the bands who call it home.

The rest of the content on this channel is mostly music videos. From the hotdog obsessed Chinese Stars/Holy Molar clips, to the breakneck, low budget montage of pop culture set to 'We Have Reached An Official Verdict: Nobody Gives A Shit', the videos are always pretty fucked up and usually a little rough around the edges. There's an exception to that rule though (at least the rough around the edges part). The video for The Locust's "Slum Service (Served On The Sly)", stands out for how well shot it is among a collection of pretty amateur-looking clips. It's my highlight from this user; a definite candidate for my favourite music video ever too.

Though not abounding in content, threeonegrecords is an awesome channel. It updates pretty slowly (about once a month), but, for the odd gem it turns up, the subscription is definitely worthwhile. Plus there's a fair bit of back-catalogue to browse while you wait. It's worth checking out for fans of Chinese Stars, The Locust, and their many offshoots and cousins, but I doubt it'd appeal much to the rest of you.
