Men of Unitus - Gland of Hope and Glory |
Like I always expected they would, Men of Unitus have come to fuck you up. Powerful, dominating, chaotic but somehow still in control and as wrong as the 'cruciphallax' that graces the CD, 'Gland of Hope and Glory' represents the self-recorded fruits of labour from Hertfordshire's finest, Men of Unitus.
The massive riffery from the guitars is nothing less than reinforced with tight drumming and fixed bass. Sykes' mostly indecipherable vocal noise lies on top (and is set annoyingly low in the mix, I reckon) conveying the typical frenzied, violent attack that he probably gets holy erections over.
From the moment 'Three Glands Full', the full-on bombast kick that follows the eery intro, storms in you're treated to a ferociously powerful ride. This album is relentless. I mean RELENTLESS (think: Riffosaurases charging around England, post-Guitarmageddon). It's bloody. It's brutal. It's perfect.
It's hard to pick faults or any tracks that stand up over others for two reasons; a) I'm quite used to some of these songs from earlier demos, albeit with less gland-based themes in the song titles (e.g. 'Look Ma, No Glands!' was previously known as 'Tupelo' - the first track on our 'Pedestrian 01' compilation) and b) because it's just so solid. It has been a long time coming, this band have been going much longer than when they aurally raped me on a Saturday night in Bedford about 4 years ago. But through whatever reasoning, the album is finally here, its quality is assured. 'Gland of Hope and Glory' is an assault.
