An Emergency - Wrecked Angles
Exeter seems to have a very healthy punk scene at the moment, with bands like Chaps, the Computers and Marshall Teller more than filling the quota.

Unfortunately An Emergency can no longer be counted as part of the current scene, as yet another ‘hiatus’ has taken hold. I’m not 100% sure whether this album (An Emergency’s 4th release after 2 EP’s and a split 7”) can be called posthumous.

I’m fairly certain I received my copy of the LP before the band's last show, but I think the official release may have been after. In any case, this record brings together many of my favourite aspects of loud, fast, rock’n roll punk. It stays heavy on the Hot Snakes/Drive Like Jehu riffage throughout, whilst tying it together with the hypnotic disco edge of bands like Black Eyes and, less so, Blood Brothers. Even though the band only contains 2 guitars and drums, it is filled out on record with some totally stomach-churning, heavy synths which more than make up for the lack of bass guitar.

The flow between tracks like ‘The Swarm’ and ‘We Were Born’ creates long pulsing tracks that start off fast and shredding, before coming down to an extended calm and eventually kick-start back up again into a whirlwind of riffs and licks. Guitarist Dan now plays in the equally rocking, Dischord-loving Tropics and Ben is the drummer in Ok Pilot.
