Stapleton - Rest and Be Thankful
The fourth album from the Scottish indie underground legends is a bit of a slow burner. The last 3 albums were so easy to fall in love with so the anticipation leading up to 'Rest and Be Thankful' was of a ridiculous scale. Which was probably why, on the first couple of listens, I was caught off guard when I wasn’t instantly blown away as per usual. But after much persistence and a live show that was heavy on this records material, it suddenly clicked.

If previous album ‘Hug the Coast’ was the perfect album for those cold and frosty nights, then 'Rest and Be Thankful' is pretty much the opposite. Good timing with the mid-May release then, Xtramile. Sunny vocals, strained with emotion, and twinkling Pinback/Promise Ring-esque guitars are warmed through with lovely, simple production.

The only criticism I’d have about the sound of the album, is the low levels of the drums in the mix. On previous albums they were prominent and driving, whereas here they seem to have been relegated to the back, behind louder vocals and guitars.

Though probably at the bottom of the pile when it comes to the order of Stapleton’s 4 albums, but that's still a compliment when it comes to a band like this.
