The Week That Was - The Week That Was |
The Week That Was is the most recent project of Peter Brewis, who is probably most well known as one half of the songwriting duo in Field Music. After the hiatus of Field Music was announced in the middle '07, both The Week That Was and David Brewis’ solo act School of Language were soon revealed, with debut albums from both planned to land in 2008.
'Project' is definitely the right word here too, with the personnel on this album being a who‘s-who of the underground Sunderland music scene, with members of This Aint Vegas, Written From Negative and Drawn by Lines giving a helping hand, as well as a live line-up recently including Mark Simms of Bob Tilton and Johnny X of Kenickie fame.
Musically, the record unveils itself as the result of Field Music filtered through the mid-1980’s. An XTC influence is obvious, and the band are also self-proclaimed lovers of Peter Gabriel, which explains a lot too.
At only half an hour long it’s hard to understand how the album feels so epic, but the repeated themes and melodies weave in and out of brilliant mini-rock operas to create a masterpiece. The Brewis brothers seem to be on an unstoppable run when it comes to songwriting.
