Following on from a record literally bubbling over with energy and enthusiasm, they have managed to find the perfect middle ground with this 2nd ‘album’ (apparently not an album according to singer Gareth. Or an EP). Where the first album was in places slightly too cringe-inducing and sugar-fuelled, this seems to be more - dare I say - mature.

Instrumental ‘Between An Erupting Earth And An Exploding Sky’ is a beautiful bridge of swirling keyboards between a collection of the usual anthemic, shout-your-heart-out tracks, and ‘Heart Swells/Pacific Daylight Time’ verges on epic, of the Broken Social Scene variety. Lyrically it is far easier and enjoyable to listen to as well.

Combined with the prettiest packaging I’ve seen this side of 2008 (a 14cm x 19cm x 2.5cm two-piece card box containing 2 x 1” pin badges, a fanzine/comic containing lyrics and unique artwork from special musical contributors including members of Menomena, Xiu Xiu and Grandaddy, a poster and a tour DVD as well as the actual CD itself), this ends up being a pretty special release, be it an album, mini-album, EP or whatever the kids think it should be called.
