Of Montreal - Skeletal Lamping |
Following last year's well praised, pseudo-concept album, 'Hissing Fauna, Are You The Destroyer?' should've been tricky for Kevin Barnes and his gang of colourful bandmates. The record had two strong personas (Kevin and his black, shemale alter-ego, Georgie Fruit) and countless ideas.
'Skeletal Lamping' isn't so different in tone, Barnes instead choosing to grow the (Georgie) fruits of the last record and pump up the sexual lyrics to outrageous proportions ("I want to make you cum/Two hundred times a-day" and "I want to make you ejaculate until it's no longer fun" being a couple of the most memorable examples of this).
But whereas I felt on 'Hissing Fauna...' the countless changes in the songs were masterful, here they sometimes feel superfluous. Songs with amazing hooks are cursed by moments that just don't coherently gel well with what happened previously... Or even after. It makes the whole thing a bit too hard to digest after the first few sittings, which, of course eventually makes it more appetising in the long run, but I can't excuse particular moments like how 'St. Exquisite's Confessions' leads into the wonderfully named 'Triphallus to Punctuate'.
Elsewhere though, you can't really fault the terrific moments of songwriting and endless, melodious, confusing, pop that 'Skeletal Lamping' throws at you. Even if some of it does cheesily remind you of Elton John! But still, you really get a sense that Georgie Fruit really has opened up a great guise for Barnes to play with.
