Women - Women
This is a really hypnotic record. That's really the only way I can describe it. Although Alberta, Canada's Women may have a lot of clearly defined references, in an age of music which is so keen at looking back in order to look forward, they have still managed to carve out a little individuality in a genre that has some big names.

For much like Deerhunter's 'Cryptograms', or, any Animal Collective record, this album holds you in an utter daze of noise but also sweet melodies that regale the days of the Beach Boys taking heavy drugs with The Stooges, and does so fantastically well. The recording isn't even that brilliant, like Times New Viking or Liars have shown that having a trademark "hiss" instantly and easily creates atmosphere.

So what is it that's original or indeed definable about this record? Well, it's got tunes when it needs to: 'Shaking Hand' is a fantastically twitchy guitar-ridden rock song, whereas lead single 'Black Rice' despite the really scarily Brian Wilson-esque vocals is a fantastic pop ditty. But really, its a very easy record to be apart of. It sucks you in from the start with the simple 'Cameras' and 'Lawncare' and then sets you off on a daydreamy landscape of sound and is both summery and dreamy, like on acoustic lead 'Group Transport Hall', as it is dark and atmospheric, like the Liars-inspired 'January 8th'. It is essentially, the sleeper hit of the year and I'm excited to see what this band come up with next.
