First time around I completely missed both this record and the trio of garage rocking Texans that wrote it. It wasn't until hearing it that I recognised "that was from the Channel 4 advert", but there's so much to this record than that. The thing is, my ignorance aside, there isn't a record that has rocked so hard all year. But its not just about rocking out, there's dancing, sing-a-longs, masquerades, psychedelic wig-outs and generally a good, if slightly weird, time.
The main shame with this record is that not every track is as entirely focused as some of the betters. Because for every stunner on this 12 track album, there is also a slightly noisy, slightly pointless track. It's a heavy one to get your head around. For every thumper: 'Let's Talk About It', 'Shake Shake Shake' there's a 'I Can Tell You' or 'Look That Way At It'. This is perhaps understandable; America for a completely re-structured version of this album, questioning its fluidity as an "entire record" as it is anyway, so although it is recommended to take this album on a track-by-track basis, it is a shame because had this been a complete record, we could have been talking about an "album of the year".
As it stands though, this is an extremely enjoyable bunch of songs, mostly based on a psychedelic garage-rock sound, but not afraid to go into strange territory like the opening afro-beat of 'Heart From All of Us' or the verging on epic 'Mess Your Hair Up' or even the poppy, show tune-y 'Sitting'. It is an album that will make you want to dance, shout and have a good time, and in the less important tracks, have a breather.
And so, while it is a shame this band haven't come up with the complete record they perhaps deserved, it is good to see a band whose sound is mostly steeped in an old 60's revivalist sound, to throw in some more contemporary influences like Animal Collective or Battles, the problem is that the two styles don't quite yet sit together perfectly. However, for what it's worth, where this album is at its best, it's produced some of the best material of the year.
