Interview: Vivian Girls
Words: Alistair Clark
Vivian Girls are an understated, harmonising trio from NYC who have been brining their reverb drenched noisy pop to foreign lands on their recent tours. I recently caught up with them and found about their new label venture, their frolicks with Fucked Up, and their thoughts on my hometown, Glasgow.

What do you make of Glasgow so far?
Cassie: The sun is crazy. I was looking at a world map today on the internet and this is the furthest North I've ever been. Glasgow is parallel to like the Northern most point of Canada on the East coast. So it's crazy. It's really bright in the day time.
Ali: We went to a good record shop. We went to Monorail. It was pretty good.
Cassie: They had some really good records. I found The Strokes' 'Is this It' there. And it's funny because we're from New York but I haven't seen that record in New York since it came out. So it was a good find.

Would you say Glaswegian music has had a big influence on your sound?
Katy: Probably. We all listen to the Vaselines.
Cassie: We like the Vaselines but we were never trying to like get anything from their sound in the Vivian Girls. We're all Vaselines fans but they weren't a Vivian Girls influence per se.

"It's nice to know exactly what goes into record making. I think we're learning a lot."

Why did you decide to do a Beach Boys cover?
Ali: Because they're awesome.
Cassie: We went up to Canada with TV on the Radio in July and on the ride back in the van our friend Todd put on 'Girl Don't Tell Me' and then I was like, "Woah this song is so sweet," and Katy agreed and then we just decided to cover it because it was an awesome song. It's also one of the few Beach Boys songs without any harmonies whatsoever and we thought it would be fun to add our own harmonies.

How's the new label going?
Katy: So far it's been a lot of work but it's been fun. It's still like happening now. It's still new. We haven't really mailed out any of the 7"s yet because we've been here. So we haven't really gotten a response. I guess we'll see. I'm sure it's going to be great.

Why did you decide you wanted to start your own label?
Katy: Because we can. We had a little free time. We're putting out different records now on different labels and doing stuff with labels so we felt like we should know exactly what these labels were doing that we can't really do ourselves. Surprisingly not that much. It's nice to know exactly what goes into record making. I think we're learning a lot.

Do you have bigger plans for it?
Cassie: For now we're just going to put out our own stuff but maybe in the future when we're not so busy touring we'll put out releases of our friends' bands.
Ali: We're still putting out full records with In The Red. This label is just for 7"s or fun little projects we feel like taking on.
Katy: We're going to reissue our Wild Eyes single ourselves. We're down to like the last 100 copies so we're going to do a reissue of that on our label.

How did you get involved with the Fucked Up album?
Katy: I've been going to see Fucked Up for a couple of years. We met and became acquaintances casually. We played with them at South By Southwest in the What's Your Rupture showcase and I was talking to Mike and he was like, "You're in a band?" and I was like, "Yeah we're playing tonight," and he was like, "Vivian Girls? we have a song called Vivian Girls," and I was like, "Yeah isn't that weird." Then he listened to us and said he liked us in a creepy, Manson-family sort of way. So then he asked us to do backing vocals and we said yes.

Did you stay for their full 12-hour show?
Ali: Katy stayed for a long time. I left to go see Dillinger 4 which I wound up getting too drunk to stay there for. But yeah that was really cool. I got to see Moby play a Ramones song.
Katy: I got to see Ezra from Vampire weekend sing a Blitz cover and a Descendents cover. Me and John Joseph hung out on the sidewalk and talked about fashion designing. It was a weird day.

Can you tell me a bit about how you made your music video?
Cassie: Our friend Tim directed it. He's me and Katy's room mate. He's a very good film maker and he's been asking us if we wanted to do a music video with him for a little while. We finally decided in September that it was the time. So we just did it. We brainstormed the concept together. Then we basically drove a lot of our friends out to New Jersey and filmed the video in Katy's parents' back yard basically.
