The Coral - In The Morning

In case you hadn’t realised, spring is upon us, and let’s be honest, it’s a shit season isn’t it? The weather changes more often than Magnolia’s storyline, it's mainly cold (and unlike the winter, there is no chance of snow or any Christmas day to look forward to) and when it does creep above 0C its only for a fleeting second, serving as a harsh reminder that summer is still 2 months away. Normally I wouldn’t have thought that new Coral material (first new music in about a year and a half) would be something to bring any joy to this miserable time, specially as I’ve always thought their music has an instantly dislikeable feel about it, jangly hippy crap, every time I hear 'Dreaming Of You' I feel like tearing my ears off and sending them to Mike Tyson. With a knife and fork. And condiments. With their new single though (worth a second listen due to the fact that it’s been produced by the legendary Portishead) they havetaken a leaf out of the Earlies impressive notebook, added it to their own spice and herbs and a tingly piano riff which just begs to be listened to on repeat.

Though 'In The Morning' isn’t as deep or "far out" as anything the Earlies have done it's certainly a step up from any of their previous work, and also obviously a lot better than the Zutons, but then again, most band have farts that sound better than their irritating substandard spew. 'In The Morning', my friends, is the perfect spring anthem and will automatically brighten up your day.

I’m thinking now that maybe the reason I like the Coral might have something do to with the fact that I’m not a singleton anymore. Happy music for happy people.
